Un-Valentine's Day

The girls at Girl Talk Thursday are talking about Valentine's Day this week. This is how I feel about the holiday in a nutshell:

Before you cast me off as a heartless grinch, let me explain. First of all, I do often participate in sending cards to my friends, observing it more as a friendship day than anything (maybe this childhood habit is harder to break). And of course Hubby and I went all out for it when we first started dating. But now? It's much more meaningful to me if Hubby gives me a card or chocolate or flowers (*cough* which he's never done in the 8 years we've been together... maybe this public shaming will prompt him to swing into action *cough*) on a day when he doesn't feel obligated to and when I don't expect it. I completely, 100% agree that you should tell the people you love that you love them, but don't expect me to do it when and how Hallmark tells me.

:) I agree too!...

but...

Can't I just turn it into a half-b'day kinda day?

A girl has to do what a girl has to do sometimes, right?!

hee, hee!
Love ya, margie

Exactly! Yeah, I like little gifts, and tokens of affection and mushy cards....but I want it to come from your heart, not from guilt! lol

I would just like to state for the record that, although my wife's grammar suggests that I don't buy her cards or chocolates or flowers, I do. I do not buy flowers, because they die and are stupid.

And she really ought to know that a man with no shame feels it neither privately or publicly.

Thank you.

Heh. Chocolates *cough* wouldn't be awful *cough*. Wait, my husband can't see this .. nevermind. Let us know if YOUR subtle shaming works, ok?

Public shame? That's really funny. Also? I love you!

I tell mine all the time - flowers or treats for absolutely no reason would knock my socks (or underpants) off. So far, no dice.

I agree 100 percent.

Like Kelly, I tell mine with words, gestures, and small gifts all the time. He? Yeah... not so much. He's lucky I love him. ;)

I wholehearty concur with your position on this matter. Not a fan of Hallmark Holidays either.

P.S. to "Monty 42" - you could always buy your wife a potted flower plant (tulips, daffodils, baby roses, violets) which would not die. But honestly, most women LOVE to receive a dozen red roses - even if they are stupid and they die. Try it once. Just for the heck of it.
